Chicago, IL — Congressman Jesus “Chuy” Garcia endorsed Robert Murphy for alderman of the Northwest Side’s 39th ward today.

“Robert Murphy had the courage to stand up to Joe Berrios and the machine,” Garcia said. “His leadership will help bring much-needed reforms to the broken property tax system. Robert will help bring transparency and accountability to City government and put the interests of the 39th ward before the special interests that now grip city hall. I enthusiastically endorse Robert Murphy for 39th ward alderman.”

Garcia represents Illinois’ 4th Congressional District, including part of the 39th ward, and has built a significant political organization that has successfully endorsed and elected a number of progressive candidates on the Northwest Side.

“I am honored to receive Congressman Garcia’s endorsement,” said Murphy. “Chuy Garcia has a long history of political independence and service to the people of Chicago.”

Murphy is currently the Democratic committeeman of the 39th ward. Previously, he served as president of the Forest Glen Community Association and was a co-founder of the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition, which successfully advocated that the city institute reforms to reduce airplane noise. He has also earned the endorsements of former Alderman and Cook County Clerk David Orr, Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi, Alderman Scott Waguespack, State Senator Heather Steans, and UIC Professor and former Alderman Dick Simpson.

The current alderman of the 39th ward is Marge Laurino, who is retiring. The election for the open aldermanic seat will be on February 26, 2019.
